Geometric Patterns in Islamic Architecture

28, 29, 30 January 2022
Geometry, Calligraphy and Arabesque (Islimi or vegetal floral patterns) are an ensemble of fervour expressed in Islamic art and architecture. Geometry being a delicate yet complicated expression has been explored in different patterns, scales and proportions. Geometrical application is seen not only in plan and volumetric design of the structure but also in many elements (facade, doors, windows, qibla wall, mihrab, minbar, flooring, railing, jali screen) which displays excellent craftsmanship and mathematical calibre. The intent of the short 3-day course is to study, draw and critically analyse the selected patterns from each archetype in a systematic process of breaking down from contour to tessellations, further understanding the underlying grid to tessellate, and creating a magnificent tangible to intangible display.
