Housing - Repair and Retrofit
Location: Thakkar Bappa Colony, Kurla, Mumbai
Year: September 2023 - Ongoing
The project started as a fourth-year studio in Mass Inhabitations. One of the arguments made by SEA is that mass housing at scale can only be tackled through repair and retrofit. The students took up the Thakkarbappa colony in Kurla to study along with the Kishan Garodia Vishwavrutti Foundation (KGVF).
4th year students from SEA (A20 Batch) began collecting crucial data and worked with the residents in a participatory design exercise. KGVF played an important role in assembling community members and creating an awareness of ‘healthy homes’. The same exercise was repeated with the next batch of students (A21), where the team from KGVF helped identify potential people whose houses could be redesigned. The process was similar to the previous batch, but with detailed designs of houses in consultation with the stakeholders. The students further presented their work to the community in a public presentation.
After the student projects were completed, SEA Clinic took up the initiative of designing houses for the community. The design team presented a stall at a local community hall for house designs, along with other stalls for local produce that the community had set up. Two houses have been designed so far, and many others have approached SEA Clinic in consonance with KGVF to improve their homes.
