Prototypes for Toilets at SGNP

Location: Mumbai
Year:

Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is a 104 sq.km. reserved Forest in the northern suburbs of Mumbai. In addition to being rich in several species of flora and fauna, the park is also home to several tribes who have been inhabiting the forest. While tribal customs and practices have their own logics and rhythms, such close proximity to the city has blurred the boundaries between urban practices and tribal customs. Many tribes now interact with the city for work, education, health, etc. However, many continue to practice open defecation in the forests. This poses health risks as well as security risks, mainly for women.

In this context, the Committed Communities Development Trust (CCDT), which continues to work in the area of health and education, approached the School of Environment and Architecture to consult them on proposing toilets for the tribal community. In this preliminary proposal, we presented a rapid appraisal of the context, its sanitation condition, community practices, and proposed prototypes for
building toilets in the community. We also provided design guidelines for the toilets, details of three prototypes, and suggestions for scaling up the delivery.
