South Asian Architecture & Urbanism

South Asian Timeline

As a part of the History Theory Methods Course, the students from Semester 5 (Third Year Batch 2017-18, School of Environment and Architecture) conducted an intensive survey of Architecture/Built Form in South Asian region. These timelines are constructed for Architectural Projects built between the time frame of 1950-1990s, in the South Asian region (comprising of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan & Sri Lanka). Over 37 students brought along with them, one architectural project from India and one project from a South Asian country other than India, each.

Following this process, overall around 74 projects were selected and compiled into nine country-wise graphical time-lines. Each of the timeline thus illustrated
a. Photo montage of the selected buildings arranged along time.

b. A historical time-line explaining the important socio-political events of the countries.

c. A time-line of Gross domestic product of the country, a monetary measurement, giving insights into the economic development.

By taking into account these factors, the project attempted at building a thread of historical development of architecture in South Asia so as to get an overview of the built-form that exists here today. It attempted at finding the many links that ought to exist between the Architecture and the varied social, political, cultural and economic circumstances prevalent at the time of its production.
